Mongolia's borders are now open to French, Swiss, Belgian and other nationals. They can therefore travel to this country at any time. All you need is an electronic visa. Foreigners from certain countries are exempt from this rule. Are the French, Swiss and Belgians among them?

Warning, in January 2023 the Mongolian authorities have decided to exempt 34 nationalities (including the French, Belgians and Swiss) from visa requirements as part of their tourism programme. These nationalities can travel for tourism only to Mongolia for up to 30 days, visa-free, until the end of 2025.

Not all nations are visa-free for Mongolia

Since 14 March 2022, Mongolia has relaxed the conditions governing access to its territory. As a result, travel to the country has resumed as normal. Nationals of a certain nationality can already travel to Mongolia without needing a visa. Others, however, cannot cross Mongolian soil without a visa.

If you are Belgian, French or Swiss, you cannot depart for any entry into Mongolia without this document. The same applies to citizens of the European Union, regardless of the purpose or length of stay in Mongolia.

How do I obtain a visa for Mongolia?

French, Swiss and Belgians will need a visa to travel to Mongolia after 2025. This document comes in several forms, including electronic. The e-visa of Mongolia is a digital authorisation to enter this territory. It is the easiest way to obtain authorisation to enter this country without visiting a consulate.

This document allows you to stay safely on Mongolian soil. Once issued, it is valid for only 5 months, with a maximum stay of 30 days in the country. The Mongolian e-visa is obtained in several stages.

Putting together the file

All travellers to Mongolia must have a number of documents, depending on the type of e-visa they wish to obtain.

For example, for the tourist visa or the transit visa, you must have a photo of the identity page of your passport. Note in passing that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. You will also need a passport photo and the contact details of someone you know who can be contacted in an emergency.

To apply for an electronic, cultural or sporting event visa, you will also need the above documents. Other additional documents may be requested after examining the file. These may include travel insurance, hotel reservations, return tickets and other documents.

Fill in the online form

Once the necessary documents have been prepared, the next step is to fill in the form. This is mainly used to enter personal and professional information.

The formular is therefore available online. You will therefore need to fill in the empty fields with the answers to the questions asked. This must be done with great care. So that you can easily see the answers. In fact, they will be transcribed onto the e-visa as written on the form.

Retrieving and printing your e-visa

After examining the application, the consular office can either approve or reject it. If your application is approved, you will receive your e-visa by e-mail a few days later. You will need to make a copy and carry it with you throughout your trip.

Are vaccinations against Covid-19 essential for those travelling to this country?

The lifting of barrier measures and Mongolia and the reopening of borders are accompanied by a number of other decisions. It goes without saying that the recent global health situation was not without consequences. To prevent the spread of the pathogen responsible for covid-19, all travellers should be vaccinated.

As a result, as soon as they arrive in a country, they have to show proof of an RT-PCR test. This rule no longer applies in Mongolia. The French, Swiss, Belgians and others are no longer obliged to carry out this test. Nor are they required to undergo any other Covid-19 antigen test.

Apart from that, there is no longer any need for a full vaccination programme against this disease. What's more, the country's authorities no longer require foreigners to undergo quarantine. However, vigilance is still required.

That's why regular hand washing and wearing protective masks remain relevant. These measures can change from one moment to the next. That's why you need to be well informed before any trip to Mongolia.
